Russell Crowe has been chatting about shedding the hefty 24 kilograms he piled on for new movie ‘The Nice Guys’.

The 'Gladiator’ star stacked it on for the role of private detective Jackson Healy in the movie, in which he stars opposite Ryan Gosling.

“I was 121.6 kilos the first week of August last year. I did a movie called The Nice Guys, so I wanted to be the physical juxtaposition of Ryan Gosling,” he told Australian radio hosts Fitzy and Wippa on Nova FM.

“So I’m clawing my way back from that. For an old boy, it’s coming along.”

Crowe was snapped out and about looking considerably more girthsome than usual last summer.

But now, thanks to a strict fitness regimen, he’s fighting fit again.

It’s not the first time he’s packed the weight on for a role, gaining 23 kilograms for his role as tobacco executive-turned-whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand in 'The Insider’, opposite Al Pacino.

He also had nothing but good things to say about co-star Gosling.

“I tell you mate, that kid is a comic genius,” he said.

“He’s great company, he’s really smart, loves what he does, he asks all the right questions and working with him was such a treat.

“The amount of times I corpsed on camera in total over all those [past] films would be less than per week working with Ryan - that kid knows how to make me laugh.”

The movie, a crime caper penned and directed by Shane Black, is due out in May, and sees Crowe teaming up once again with his 'LA Confidential’ co-star Kim Basinger.
