Simon Kinberg Says Deadpool 2 Shooting Early 2017, Talks Future X-Men Movies

‘X-Men’ series writer and producer Simon Kinberg won’t give much away about the future of the 20th Century Fox comic book franchise - except that the ‘Deadpool’ sequel is most definitely on the horizon.

Kinberg tells Collider, “The guys, (Paul) Wernick and (Rhett) Rheese, are working on the script, and we hope to have a script very soon… we hope to shoot the movie sometime in the beginning of next year.“

It’s no surprise that Fox would be keen on a second ‘Deadpool’ straight away, given that the first film surpassed all expectations earlier this year with a global box office haul of almost $779 million.

This is not only a record for an R-rated movie, it’s also the most money made by any film in the ‘X-Men’ series, knocking ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’s haul of almost $748 million into second place.

For this reason, Kinberg says the studio are not too disappointed by the comparative under-performance of this year’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ which has made just over $514 million thus far: relatively small change in this time of billion dollar blockbusters, but still the third highest-grossing ‘X-Men’ movie to date.

"I think [Fox] are happy. The truth is, ‘Days of Future Past’ was sort of an outlier for an X-Men movie; we never made more than $500 million before. And 'Days’ was sort of our 'Avengers,’ where we brought this mega-cast together.

"So we hoped ['Apocalypse’] would do the same as 'Days of Future Past’; we had a feeling, maybe it would, maybe it wouldn’t. It’s a different kind of film than 'Days of Future Past.’”

As for where the ‘X-Men’ series will go next - another movie with the 'Apocalypse’ cast, 'X-Force,’ or 'New Mutants’ - Kinberg will confirm nothing.

“I’m thinking about all those things, that’s all I can tell you. We certainly know we’re making 'Deadpool 2;’ we know we’re making the 'Wolverine’ movie now; we wanna make a 'New Mutants’ movie; we’re really, really serious about making the 'Gambit’ movie.”

As for the third and final 'Wolverine’ movie that’s currently in production, Kinberg says, “I can only tell you that it’s going extremely well, and that’s all I will tell you about it.”

It’s also no accident that we’re not seeing a lot of official reveals on Hugh Jackman’s swansong as Logan, as they’re keen to retain some mystery:

“We really want it to be discovered, the way we used to watch movies when you didn’t know everything about them when you went to go see them.”

No release date has been set for ‘Deadpool 2,’ but the as-yet untitled ‘Wolverine’ sequel will be the next X-movie to hit cinemas, on 2 March 2017.
