Sky Cinema and NOW: Everything new in October 2021

Some of Sky and HBO's most beloved programmes are returning to screens in October, with the likes of Succession and Curb Your Enthusiasm jetting across the Atlantic, while Brit interests are represented by the third series of comedy show Brassic.

Elsewhere, Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain deliver prestige miniseries Scenes from a Marriage, while the movie portion of Sky's offering welcomes Steven Soderbergh thriller No Sudden Move and animated sequel Monster Family 2.

New movies on Sky Cinema and NOW in October 2021

Voyagers (8 October)

Set in the year 2063, this futuristic spin on a Lord of the Flies style plot follows a group of teenage astronauts who are sent blasting into space with the hope of finding a new home for humanity, away from an Earth ravaged by climate change. Things begin to go wrong when they discover a secret about their mission, which unlocks their less civil urges.

The cast includes some impressive talent, with Dunkirk's Fionn Whitehead joining Lily-Rose Depp, Tye Sheridan, Chanté Adams and Colin Farrell. Divergent filmmaker Neil Burger is in the director's chair.

No Sudden Move (9 October)

Steven Soderbergh delivers period crime thrills in this twisty tale, which stars Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro at the head of a talented ensemble of stars. The duo are part of a group of small-time crooks tasked with a simple-sounding hostage job which, naturally, unravels to become a more complex tale of conspiracy and power.

The movie debuted on HBO Max in the United States this summer, but is now finally making it to British shores on the back of strong reviews from critics.

Breaking News in Yuba County (16 October)

This intriguing drama follows Allison Janney as a recently widowed woman who decides not to report her husband's death and instead declares that he is missing. She subsequently becomes a tabloid darling as she continues to spin her lie. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Awkwafina, Mila Kunis, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.

Monster Family 2 (22 October)

Monster Family was the first ever Sky Cinema original movie back in 2017, with the animated tale telling the story of a family who were transformed into monsters by an evil witch. Poor reviews have done nothing to prevent this sequel arriving, which sees the Wishbone family become beasties once again.

Queen of Speed (23 October)

Michèle Mouton fought her way into the upper echelons of rally driving in the 1970s and 1980s, at a time in which very few women were even able to begin to take part in the sport. This documentary follows her life and her rise from obscurity to becoming one of the most celebrated rally drivers of all time, regardless of gender. It's driven by interviews with Mouton, as well as her family, teammates and bitter rivals.

The Three Lives of Michael X (October TBC)

A complex historical figure from the civil rights movement is at the centre of this documentary. Michael De Freitas was born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1933 and subsequently became a prominent member of the Black Power movement in the UK, christened Michael X in reference to US activist Malcolm X. The documentary explores his time as an influential figure in the 1960s, as well as the events which led to him being tried and convicted for murder.

Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union (1 October)

This three-part series from HBO looks at the upbringing, rise to power and the presidency of Barack Obama, casting a retrospective eye over his eight years in the White House.

Saturday Night Live S47 (3 October)

America's most prominent comedy spectacular is back for a new series of sketches and silliness. A-list guest hosts for this run include Owen Wilson, Kim Kardashian West, Rami Malek and Jason Sudekis.

Miracle Workers: Oregon Trail S3 (4 October)

This unusual anthology comedy series returns for its third season and, this time, it focuses on the titular wagon route during the 19th century. Daniel Radcliffe stars as Reverend Ezekiel Brown, who teams up with Steve Buscemi's outlaw as he travels in search of a better life.

Brassic S3 (6 October)

The lives of working class friends in Northern England continue to sit in the spotlight as Brassic returns for its third run, with Joe Gilgun and Michelle Keegan at the centre of the cast. The show's balance of crime, comedy and drama has been praised by critics, with Gilgun nominated for a Bafta this year for his comic performances on Brassic.

Scenes from a Marriage (11 October)

In the 1970s, legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman made miniseries Scenes from a Marriage, starring his regular collaborator Liv Ullmann and exploring the collapse of the marriage between a divorce lawyer and a psychology professor. Almost 50 years later, Hagai Levi has made this remake of the series for HBO, with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in the lead roles. The series premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and it's fair to say the duo broke the internet on the red carpet.

Portrait Artist of the Year 2021 (13 October)

Presenting duo Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell welcome a new selection of amateur and professional artists to Battersea Arts Centre. By immortalising famous faces in paint form, they compete to earn the title of Portrait Artist of the Year.

Cobra: Cyberwar S2 (16 October)

Robert Carlyle plays the prime minister in this zeitgeisty political thriller about the corridors of the power, in the midst of various crises and the rising tide of fake news. The series sees Carlyle's character and his government battling back against an "invisible global enemy" deploying cyber warfare against the UK.

The Deirdre O’Kane Show (17 October)

Stand-up comedy showcases have a rather varied history on British TV, but the latest attempt at the genre stars Irish comic Deirdre O'Kane. She will introduce performances from rising stars of the UK's comedy circuit, as well as established stars.

Statues Redressed (18 October)

Statues have been at the centre of febrile political discourse over the last year, and this documentary special aims to focus on their legacy. In the doc, artists will seek to reinvent some of the most famous statues in Liverpool, hoping to reflect the realities of history and their place in the modern world.

Succession S3 (18 October)

Telly's most dysfunctional family of rich folk return for the third season of Succession, led by Brian Cox as patriarchal figure Logan Roy. This time around, he has been placed in a difficult position after an ambush by his son Kendall (Jeremy Strong). Expect corporate struggles and big money betrayals.

The Good Doctor S5 (19 October)

Freddie Highmore is back to lead another series of this medical drama, in which he plays an autistic savant working as a surgeon at a California hospital.

Al Murray: Why Do the Brits Win Every War? (20 October)

Comedian Al Murray has become well known over the last decade or so for his over-cranked Pub Landlord character. He brings that character — and his off-stage persona — to this comic exploration of Britain's fascination with war and its military history. Given he co-hosts historical podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk, he definitely knows his stuff.

Curb Your Enthusiasm S11 (25 October)

Larry David again portrays a semi-fictionalised version of himself as the beloved American sitcom returns for its third season since it was revived in 2017. Still living in LA as a semi-retired TV writer, David will again find himself in trouble as he struggles to understand the world, which is changing around him.

Insecure S5 (26 October)

Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore's comedy series returns for its fifth and final season, having again received a selection of awards nominations for its fourth run. Rae again leads the cast as the series continues to explore the ways in which race and social issues affect modern America.

Temple S2 (28 October)

This intriguing British series, based on Norwegian drama Vaklyrien, follows Mark Strong's surgeon and his illegal medical clinic beneath the eponymous Tube station. Daniel Mays, Carice Van Houten and Rhys Ifans are also in the cast.
