Sonic the Hedgehog 3 confirms Jim Carrey is returning as Dr Robotnik
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 spoilers follow.
It has been confirmed that Jim Carrey will return as Dr Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
According to Variety, the actor will reprise his role as the franchise's mad scientist, despite the character's unfortunate ending in the second film — where he fell from a giant robot.
The movie's post-credit scene went on to confirm that Robotnik's body hadn't been found, leaving the door open for the antagonist to make his dramatic return.

Carrey will come out of retirement for the role, after he previously revealed his plans to step away from acting in 2022.
"It depends if the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink and it says to me that it's gonna be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break," he told Access during press for Sonic's second instalment.
Following Carrey's comments, Sonic producers Toby Ascher and Neal H Mortiz said in April 2022 that they "wouldn't even try" to recast the role.

Ascher explained: "Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he'll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around.
"We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he'd like to be there with us."
The upcoming film will also see the return of Ben Schwartz as Sonic himself, who'll likely be joined by Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in cinemas on December 20, 2024.
