Russo Brothers’ Male Ghostbusters Spin-Off Cancelled

With ‘Captain America: Civil War’ incoming and the massive two-volume ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ on its way, directorial duo Joe and Anthony Russo look set to be very busy indeed for the foreseeable future.

Naturally, this may have left some fans wondering how the sibling filmmakers would find time for the all-male ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-off - said to be entitled ‘Ghost Corps’ - to which they had also been linked.

It seems the answer is, they literally couldn’t find the time, as the Russo Brothers have now confirmed to Forbes that they are no longer attached to the film. Furthermore, they also indicate that the film is no longer on the table.

Joe Russo explains, “There is no status with that for us. There was a period there when Paul Feig was engaging Sony in talks about ‘Ghostbusters’ and we were also engaging them.

“He was further along with his process than we were and he closed his deal so that’s the only ‘Ghostbusters’ world that’s being explored right now over at Sony.

“Once we took ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ it took us off the table for any kind of any potential work on a ‘Ghostbusters’ project.”

Details on the Russos’ prospective ‘Ghost Corps’ came out in the Sony e-mail hack scandal, wherein it was revealed the studio had Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum in mind for the film (although Pratt has since denied ever entering talks about it).

However, another unlikely-sounding project which came to light from the Sony hack - a crossover betwen ‘21 Jump Street’ and ‘Men in Black’ - is now confirmed to be in the works, so perhaps it was decided this was a better vehicle for Tatum.

It is of course likely that the abandonment of Sony’s initial plans for a broader ‘Ghostbusters’ movie universe will be taken by some as confirmation that the studio has no faith in Paul Feig’s upcoming reboot. But maybe we should wait to see Feig’s film before we rush to judgement there, hm?

The new ‘Ghostbusters’ opens in UK cinemas on 15 July.
