Spider-Man: Homecoming Confirms Its Villain & Additional Cast

After Tom Holland’s scene-stealing antics in Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ earlier this year, everyone’s hoping ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ can perhaps be the defining big-screen version for the character.

Even though it’s still a while off, just under 12 months in fact, there’s very little we know about the film but San Diego Comic-Con has revealed details about its main villain and who the already confirmed supporting cast will play.

While we’d been aware that Michael Keaton (’Spotlight’, ‘Birdman’) had been linked to the baddie role, during Marvel’s panel at SDCC audiences got to see footage from the film, including Keaton in full costume as villain Vulture, as reported by Screen Rant.

And in typical Marvel fashion, Vulture’s outfit has been updated for the MCU, just like we’ve seen for Captain America and recently Spider-Man himself. Some fans may feel precious about altering an established look too much, but going by Marvel’s track record, it should be aesthetically pleasing enough to appease the majority.

What’s more, Marvel also released concept art depicting Vulture battling Spider-Man, which clarifies Keaton’s role and a clear focus on who Peter Parker’s nemesis is.

As well as Michael Keaton’s Vulture now official as ‘Homecoming’s’ baddie, the early footage also revealed more names that would make up the supporting cast. During the short clip, also recalled by Screen Rant, viewers learned that Tony Revolori (’The Grand Budapest Hotel’) is playing Parker’s classmate Flash Thompson. While we knew Revolori was cast in the movie, his role was unknown. Here, he’s seen being asked a question by his teacher, as Peter watches himself on YouTube as Spider-Man during ‘Civil War’s’ epic airport showdown, where he’s battling Giant-Man.

The comics depict Flash as a blonde-haired Caucasian but as is evident with the rest of the young, diverse casting, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is striving to use a range of actors from various ethnic backgrounds, which is something Marvel are known for.

The film’s director, Jon Watts, has confirmed that Zendaya’s character will be called Michelle, Laura Harrier as Liz, and Jacob Batalon as Ned. “We constantly refer to ourselves as The Breakfast Club,” Harrier says of their relationship, with the production described as a John Hughes type movie.

There’s still plenty to learn about ‘Homecoming’ before it hits cinemas, but with anticipation sky-high, the buzz around Marvel’s depiction of Spidey is perhaps justified, with its potential to be the best incarnation yet.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is in UK cinemas from 7 July, 2017.
