Spider-Man villain Venom to get own spin-off movie
Venom, the fearsome supervillain from the Spider-Man universe, is getting his/its own movie, it’s been confirmed.
All sharp teeth and drool, the anti-Spider-Man will be coming to a screen near you in October of 2018, according to reports.
Scott Rosenberg (who penned the likes of Con Air and Gone In 60 Seconds) is teaming with Jeff Pinkner (who’s behind the new Dark Tower and Jumanji reboot, as well as The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have been hired to write the script.
It’s not yet known whether current Spider-Man Tom Holland will be involved in the new project, but one would have thought he’s pitch up at some point.
Sony has been planning to unleash a Venom movie for some time now, first off during Sam Raimi’s tenure behind the camera, when Tobey Maguire was playing Peter Parker.
The ‘Symbiote’ alien – which needs a host to envelop, Spider-Man having been its first in the comic books – has already appeared in the Spidey movies, Topher Grace playing him in ‘Spider-Man 3’ back in 2007.
According to Slashfilm, there’s even a fan rumour doing the rounds that Sony’s forthcoming sci-fi movie ‘Life’, in which an deadly alien organism is found by a crew on the International Space Station, is being lined up as a ‘backdoor’ introduction to the character.
It might not be as unlikely as it sounds – Rhett Reese, who co-wrote ‘Deadpool’, was once tasked with writing a Venom script back when Andrew Garfield was playing Spider-Man.
Reese’s most recent project is, wait for it… ‘Life’.
It might be nothing, of course, but we’ll see when that movie hits screens on March 24.
