Star Wars 7’s BB-8 Cannot Be Completely Trusted

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ introduces a new droid, BB-8, who might just give R2-D2 a run for his money… but can he be trusted?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the plucky little droid has a number of secrets… and it might even be hiding its real mission from those ‘Star Wars 7’ heroes.

“He’s kind-of like a Swiss army knife… a cute Swiss army knife,” said EW reporter Anthony Breznican. “But one, it’s creators say, should not completely be trusted.”

“Abrams and the designers always imagined BB-8 as being rather manipulative,” he explained. “They say the droid knows he’s cute – he knows that he can win people over with that… and he uses it like a mischievous child to get his own way.”

But what does this mean for ‘The Force Awakens’?

Well, it sounds as though even Rey herself might not be able to trust the new droid on the block… and that makes us wonder whether she’s only recently acquired the droid a la Luke Skywalker’s purchase of R2-D2 from the Jawas.

And much like Artoo, it sounds as though BB-8 is initially hiding something…

“In [The Force Awakens] he has a very important mission and he has to accomplish it to the best of his ability,” he added. “He uses every tool he has – his personality, his coyness, and his adorableness, all to get the job done.”

As you’ll no doubt recall, R2-D2 goes through a very similar storyline in the original ‘Star Wars’ movie, all in order to deliver his holographic message to Ben ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi on Tatooine.

But could BB-8 be in a similar situation?

Either way, it looks as though he’ll have some surprises left for Episodes VIII and IX.

“BB-8 has retained some secrets for future films,” he teased. “The Force Awakens won’t absolutely define what each panel on his body does. But each has a specific purpose, I’m promised. Whether it be a data port or a docking station or a welding torch… he also comes equipped with various self-defence mechanisms – at least one of these ports opens up and a taser-like probe comes out to shock things. He also has ejection ports for shooting little grappling hooks that will allow him to climb vertically.”

It certainly sounds as though BB-8 has plenty of tricks up his sleeves… or packed away in those panels. But will Han, Chewie and the gang be able to trust him? We’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
