Star Wars 7’s Leia Isn’t Called ‘Princess’ Anymore

It looks as though Leia has gotten rid of that stuffy, old title in favour of something a bit more appropriate for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director J.J. Abrams revealed that she now goes by a rather more empowering name.

“She’s referred to as General,” he said. “But … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess.’”

Okay, so most folks don’t call her Princess anymore…

Will it be Harrison Ford’s Han Solo who calls her by her old moniker? It wouldn’t be the first time he’s jokingly used the title ‘Princess’ as an insult… but for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Either way, it sounds as though Leia has a lot on her plate… and apparently, her story is one of the heavier ones in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

“The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned,” Abrams said. “But it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison, back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I’m just a fan who loves this stuff, but they’ve been living with it — and living in it — since ’77.”

But how is General Leia handling things?

“Not easily,” said Carrie Fisher. “[She’s] solitary. Under a lot of pressure. Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed.”

And who can blame her – it’s been over thirty years since the Rebel Alliance defeated the Empire… but the galaxy far, far away is showing no sign of becoming a better place.

Once the only female role model in the ‘Star Wars’ saga, what does Carrie Fisher hope that fans take away from this new version of her character?

Her message is a simple one: “Never give up.”

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
