Star Wars: George Lucas Issues Apology For ‘White Slavers’ Remarks

Somehow we didn’t think this would take long. After causing many jaws to drop by saying he had sold ‘Star Wars’ to “white slavers,” George Lucas has issued a public apology.

Although only released in recent days, the interview in which Lucas made the already-notorious remarks was in fact conducted with journalist Charlie Rose in November, prior to the premiere of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

In his widely released statement, the ‘Star Wars’ creator says, “I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologise.

“I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and [Disney chief executive] Bob Iger’s leadership.

“Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise… I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks.

“Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of JJ (Abrams, director) and Kathy (Kennedy, producer).”

In the Charlie Rose interview, as well as likening Disney to white slavers, Lucas had also criticised the direction taken with ‘The Force Awakens,’ calling it “retro” - although he did praise JJ Abrams as “a good friend.”
