Star Wars: Rogue One May Not Have Opening Crawl

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ may not feature the iconic opening crawl.

During an interview with ET Online, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the first ever ‘Star Wars’ spin-off probably won’t have an opening crawl.

“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl,” she said. “I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.”

Of course, the opening crawl was first seen in ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ and set the scene for the upcoming film – which was dubbed ‘Episode IV’ despite being the first film of the saga.

But does ‘Rogue One’ really need any background?

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ is set between the end of ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and the very beginning of ‘A New Hope’… and in many ways, we already know what has preceded it. After all, the end of the prequel trilogy saw the Death Star being constructed.

And that’s what ‘Rogue One’ is all about.

Even director Gareth Edwards thinks a crawl isn’t really needed.

“I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that,” he said. “The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films… the whole crawl of it all — it’s funny people are fascinated on that.”

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ stars Feleicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk and Forest Whitaker.

Gareth Edwards directed based on a screenplay by Chris Weitz, Jon Knoll and Gary Whitta.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
