Stars who walked away from major accidents

Sometimes it seems like Hollywood types have all the luck in the world. They have fame, fortune and, as it turns out, occasionally, the ability to walk away from truly insane accidents.

With Kevin Hart in the news after escaping a potentially fatal car crash, what follows is a list of various vehicular catastrophes, with one thing in common - they all had blessed celebrities involved.

Morgan Freeman - Car crash

In 2008, when Morgan Freeman was 71 years old, the iconic actor was involved in a horrific car accident, after his vehicle was mangled when it veered off a Mississippi highway, flipping over several times, before ending up in a ditch.

The star suffered a broken arm, a broken elbow, and serious shoulder damage in the crash, spending four and a half hours in surgery, but was still joking with onlookers when he was being airlifted away from the crash telling bystanders who were taking pictures ‘No freebies, no freebies.’

Harrison Ford - Plane crash

Harrison Ford was so keen to get away from his Star Wars character, he requested Han Solo be killed off in Return Of The Jedi. He finally got his wish in The Force Awakens, but if he’s really that keen to distance himself from playing an adventurous pilot, maybe he should stop being such a, well, adventurous pilot.

In 1999, Ford was forced to crash-land his helicopter during a training flight, neither he nor his instructor were hurt.

In 2015, Ford was seriously injured when his World War II aircraft crashed on a LA golf course after it lost power shortly after takeoff. The actor was praised for his heroism in steering the craft to an unpopulated area.

Then, in 2017, Ford narrowly avoided a collusion with a passenger aircraft when trying to land his single-engine plane on a runway at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California.

We’re definitely not saying Ford’s a bad pilot - the way he handled each situation shows he’s a good pilot - but, still, maybe it’s time to give Chewie a go at the controls.

George Clooney - Scooter crash

Imagine turning a corner in your car and hitting a scooter. Bad enough, then imagine seeing George Clooney tumbling across your windscreen. That’s what happened to one driver in Sardinia last summer, an experience we can only imagine was surreal.

As for the details of the accident, Clooney put it better than we ever could.

“I was on a motorcycle scooter - but a big one - and a guy turned in front of me and I hit him at about 70 miles an hour,” the Oceans Eleven star recalled. “So I got launched, and I crushed his windshield in with my head and then I went flying up in the air afterward. It knocked me out of my shoes, I mean a proper accident.”

Woah.

Gary Busey - Motorcycle crash

In 1988, Gary Busy protested a bill that would make it mandatory for motorcycle riders to wear a helmet when on the road. A month later, a motorcycle accident left the actor in a critical condition with extensive trauma to the head - trauma that could have been avoided if he’d been wearing a helmet. It’s a tragic irony, but thankfully Busey survived - even if his time in hospital was extremely difficult.

"People have told me I was angry that I was in the hospital and didn't want the nurses touching me," he said. "The doctors wound up isolating me in a psychiatric ward and giving me three types of medication to calm me."

The accident hasn’t changed his attitude to motorbike safety, however. “I’m still pro-choice. Helmets do prevent some head injuries, but some people get killed wearing helmets.”

Amy Schumer - Surfboard

Not all vehicles have engines, and not all near-fatal accidents happen on the road. When Amy Schumer was caught by a freak wave while she was teaching herself to surf, she suffered serious injuries as a result. Luckily, a passerby was able to compress her injury while they waited for an ambulance.

"I have a pretty bad scar on my leg from surfing," she told Vanity Fair. "Forty-one stitches, three layers. I skegged myself. My whole fin went into my leg, and I had to yank it out. I was by myself."

Stephen King - Walking

Stephen King must have felt like he’d stepped into one of his horror stories when he went for a walk in his local area, only to be hit by a van - whose driver was too distracted by his Rottweiler, Bullet, to keep his eyes on the road.

King suffered a gash on his forehead, broken ribs, broken bones in his right hip and leg, and a punctured lung. He spent three weeks in hospital, having five operations. His post-accident pain was so bad, he almost retired from writing.

But he poured the experience into one of his most successful books, ‘On Writing.’

Oh, and he also bought the van that hit him, crushing it in a junkyard.
