Harlan Coben has told anyone who is planning to tune into his new Netflix drama, The Woods, to make sure they stream it with the subtitles on instead of watching the dubbed version.

The Netflix adaptation of Coben's 2007 novel by the same name is now a six-part series, which landed on the streaming platform on Friday. The Woods, directed by Leszek Dawid and Bartosz Konopka, is set in Poland across two time periods - 1994 and 2019 - and focuses on Warsaw prosecutor Paweł Kopiński, who discovers that his sister could still be alive after going missing more than two decades earlier.

Telling his followers that the much-anticipated show was available to stream on Netflix, Coben also encouraged them to switch to subtitles.

"Netflix gives you the choice to watch The Woods dubbed or subtitled. I urged you to use subtitles, you do you. Rock on," he wrote on Twitter.

He later replied to a fan who said they were watching with subtitles, telling them to avoid the dubbed version.

"Yes. This is the best way to watch a show or movie - original language setting with your language in subtitles. @Netflix lets you do this in the option menu. If you want to watch with English dubbing, hey, cool, I’m not in the judging business."

Judging by Twitter, it appears most people who opted for dubbing quickly switched to subtitles, with another fan tweeting Coben: "Tried watching with English dubbing, it's terrible."

"Yes. That's why I suggest watching w subtitles," the author responded.

Others also pointed out that watching with subtitles forces you to put your phone away, and we couldn't agree more. Subtitles it is.

The Woods is available to watch on Netflix now.
