Knitting is such a fun and useful crafting skill to have. With just some needles, yarn and a little know-how, you can make all sorts of things from toys and blankets to bespoke garments.

If you're a beginner knitter looking for a quick and simple project that is going to challenge your skills, we've got just the thing. Why not have a go at making this adorable knitted hat for a baby using our free pattern?

This free baby hat knitting pattern is sized for little ones aged up to 12 months old. It's such an easy pattern to follow that you can recreate it time and again in a whole variety of colours to personalise it for the intended wearer.

The pattern is made with a garter edging and then worked in stocking stitch throughout with stripes at the base and a simple crown shaping at the top. It is knitted on straight needles, and doesn't require circular knitting needles.

A knitted hat makes for a lovely and practical gift but if you'd like to create more knitted items in the same style, we've got two more patterns to go along with the knitted hat to make a full knitted baby layette collection.

We've knitted ours with DK acrylic yarn in a sage and white. You can use any DK yarn that best suits your colour scheme.

This free baby layette set of knitting patterns is perfect for knitters who have had a go at the basic knitting stitches and are ready to try new stitches and techniques such as working a raglan shaping or trying new textural stitches. The layette includes a classic baby cardigan pattern and hat, as well as an easy baby blanket knitting pattern perfect for on-the-go mums.
