The dress was famously worn when Monroe performed Happy Birthday to the then President of the United States John F. Kennedy. The garment itself has not only been sold for the huge fee of $4.8 million (that’s just under £3.9 million) but it’s now the most expensive dress ever purchased at auction, according to the Guardian.

The world’s largest privately owned collection of costumes and memorabilia associated with Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe is set to go to auction in Los Angeles, and is anticipated to make a fortune. The Guardian reports that David Gainsborough Roberts’ collection is expected to fetch some high bids, thanks largely to the presence of several costumes worn on screen by the late actress. Now in his 70s, the ex-banker from Jersey began his Monroe collection in 1991 with the dress from ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business,’ for which he paid £16,000 at auction.
