Let’s face it - he said he’d be back. And there can’t be many who’d dispute that the subsequent sequels haven’t even come close to surpassing that which came before.

Yes, James Cameron’s 1991 sci-fi action classic ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ is set for a worldwide cinematic re-release in 2016, to mark the film’s 25th anniversary.

Given that James Cameron’s involved, it should come as little surprise that this time around the epic blockbuster - starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick and Edward Furlong - will be hitting the big screen in 3D.

The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter, who say Cameron is overseeing the digital 3D conversion with DMG Entertainment and Studiocanal, and that the latest StereoD technology will be utilised.

The director (currently in pre-production on his three ‘Avatar’ sequels) says the 25th anniversary of ‘Terminator 2′ seemed “like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version,” adding “If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember.”

Dan Mintz, CEO of DMG, is similarly enthusiastic: “For a whole new generation of fans, it is truly a chance to see the movie that really set the bar for action and effects that all the movies today are trying to top, in a completely new way — in the theater and in 3D.

“We are committed to making the conversion the highest quality in order to live up to the expectations of the film’s many fans around the world.”

Reportedly one of the key marketplaces Cameron and co are targeting is China, where DMG has strong links. ‘Terminator 2′ has never been released theatrically there before, but this year’s ‘Terminator: Genisys’ performed well there, earning just shy of $113 million at the Chinese box office.

Cameron has of course long been 3D’s biggest champion, using his mega-blockbuster ‘Avatar’ (the highest-grossing film in global box office history at present) to spearhead the technology’s widespread use in contemporary film.

A 3D re-release of Cameron’s earlier mega-blockbuster ‘Titanic’ (currently number 2 on the aforementioned list) also occurred in 2012.

Back in 1991, ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ was also quite the ground-breaker. With a budget of $100 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time - but was the biggest hit of its year, earning just under $520 million worldwide.

Not for nothing, the film was also widely praised as one of the greatest action movies ever, and superior to the 1984 original. It was also a landmark film for the use of CGI, thanks to the morphing effects used on Robert Patrick’s shape-shifting T-1000.

No dates for the 3D re-release of ‘Terminator 2′ have been announced yet.
