James Wan begins shooting new horror 'Malignant'
James Wan has begun principal photography on his latest horror movie.
The Aquaman director made his name in the horror genre, creating The Conjuring and Insidious franchises, but is back with a fresh and frightening tale called Malignant.
Wan posted about the movie on Instagram to confirm his first day of shooting.
“First day of principal photography on the 10th feature film of my career,” he captioned the image of a clapper-board.
“MALIGNANT is the official title. Really excited for this one.”
“Malignant” can mean “evil in nature or effect,” or, if referring to a disease, “very virulent or infectious,” so either way it’s not looking good for the characters involved.

Plot details are being under wraps but it’s possible the film is inspired by Wan’s 2011 graphic novel Malignant Man.
It focuses on a terminal cancer patient called Alan Gates who learns that his tumor is actually a parasite able to offer him supernatural gifts. He uses these powers to take down an evil secret society and their destructive plans against mankind.
However Wan previously stated the film was not based on an existing IP, and would be an old school R-rated horror.
On his Facebook page (via Bloody Disgusting), Wan wrote in a since-deleted post: “There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is.
“All I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller.
“An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.
“That’s all I’ll say for now.”
The Malignant cast includes Maddie Hasson, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Abel, George Young, Michole Briana White and Jacqueline McKenzie.

Wallis previously starred in The Conjuring spin-off Annabelle so it looks like this film will not be part of that universe.
Wan is directing from a script he co-wrote with his fiance Ingrid Bisu.
A release date is yet to be confirmed.
