The Crow Reboot Cancelled As Relativity Media Goes Bust

To all those who embrace the popular theory that ‘The Crow’ is cursed - here’s a bit more fuel for your fire.

The entertainment industry trades have been abuzz this week with news that ‘mini-major’ Relativity Media is in serious trouble, filing for bankruptcy and making moves to sell off the completed films on their slate including Natalie Portman western ‘Jane Got A Gun’ (itself an infamously troubled production) and action movie ‘Collide’ starring Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones.

On top of this, The Wrap report Relativity’s troubles mean an immediate slam of the brakes on any films on their slate which have not yet made it to production - which, you guessed it, includes ‘The Crow.’

British director Corin Hardy’s new big screen take on the much-loved graphic novel - previously filmed in the 1994 cult favourite starring the late Brandon Lee (killed in an on-set accident, which is the cornerstone of the urban legends of the franchise being cursed) - had originally been scheduled to be in production by now at the new Pinewood Studios facility in Cardiff, with Jack Huston in the lead as undead avenger Eric Draven.

However, a change of shooting schedule (not the first) forced Huston to withdraw due to a clash with other work, putting the project back into a limbo which - thanks to the broader problems with the studio - the film seems unlikely to get out of.

Of course, this current incarnation of ‘The Crow’ is but one of many possible iterations that have been on the cards in the last few years. Initially set in motion with director F. Javier Gutiérrez (’Before the Fall’), the project courted a range of high profile lead actors including Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg and Tom Hiddleston, all of whom declined.

Finally Luke Evans signed on to play Eric - but then, when production was delayed, Gutiérrez pulled out to direct upcoming horror sequel ‘Rings.’ Evans also withdrew to pursue other work when his initial option expired.

Early in 2015, Corin Hardy - fresh from Sundance success with his debut feature ‘The Hallow’ - was hired to direct, reportedly at the recommendation of Edgar Wright. Jack Huston was announced as the new lead not long thereafter, and for a while things were looking up… but not so much anymore.

As to whether this means ‘The Crow’ reboot is now dead and buried for good; well, that remains to be seen. As Eric told us in the original, it can’t rain all the time - although it certainly does seem like it….
