'The Lion King' remake will not compete for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars
Disney may have had the last word in the debate over whether The Lion King remake is 'live-action' or not.
The movie will not be competing in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2020 Oscars, it has emerged.

The studio will be offering up Frozen II and Toy Story 4, but not The Lion King, with Frozen II to come out just in time for consideration by Oscar voters.
Jon Favreau's lavish remake of the 1994 classic had a staggering $250 million budget, and was billed as a photorealistic live action movie.
However, only one shot from the movie is actually 'live-action' footage, and that's the very first of the entire movie, of the African savannah.
Many (many) on Twitter remarked at the time that whether the movie was 'live-action' or 'animated' was barely up for debate.

But it appears Disney isn't regarding the movie as animation, be it some of the most advanced animation currently possible.
It's expected that the movie will be gunning for the award in the Visual Effects category.

Among the animated features from other studios that have been put up for consideration are Abominable, Angry Birds 2, Missing Link, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Lego Movie 2 and upcoming Netflix movie Klaus.
The nominations for the 2020 Oscars arrive on January 13, with the awards set for February 9.
