The Lost Boys Gets A Comic Book Sequel

The beloved 1987 teen horror is finally set to get a direct sequel – albeit not on the big screen.

Variety report that Vertigo, the mature readers-oriented imprint of DC Comics, will be publishing a comic book sequel to ‘The Lost Boys,’ in conjunction with DC parent company Warner Bros.

Less fortunate readers may be aware that two official ‘Lost Boys’ sequels have already been made - 2008’s ‘The Lost Boys: The Tribe’ and 2010’s ‘The Lost Boys: The Thirst’ - but these were both uninspired straight-to-DVD productions, whose only common thread with the original was Corey Feldman as vampire hunter Edgar Frog.

By contrast, this comic book from writer Tim Seeley (creator of horror series ‘Hack/Slash’) and artist Patricia Mulvihill (‘The Dark & Bloody,’ ‘Hellblazer’) promises to follow on directly from the events of the original movie, with all the surviving characters included.

Reportedly, the series will see brothers Michael and Sam (as portrayed by Jason Patric and the late Corey Haim in the movie) team up once again with the Frog Brothers to do battle with vampires.

This time, the threat is “a new gang of ruthless, stunning, life-sucking nightcrawlers known as the Blood Belles,” who have returned to the beach town Santa Carla to “collect Michael’s love interest and their lost sister, Star” (Jami Gertz).

No word yet on whether the oily saxophone guy will make an appearance…

Given the presence of a female vampire gang, fans are already speculating that this story could be an adaptation of ‘The Lost Girls,’ a long-rumoured but never produced sequel to Joel Schumacher’s film.

It’s not too unusual for unmade films to wind up finding a new life in comic book form: in recent years, Wildstorm published ‘Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash,’ based on the unrealised ‘Freddy Vs Jason’ sequel which would have seen the ‘Evil Dead’ hero join the fold.

Seeley describes ‘The Lost Boys’ as “one of my entry points into the horror genre, and I’ve been fascinated ever since.

“Getting the chance to write a sequel to the film, featuring the original characters, and getting to work with Scott, Patricia and Tony (Harris, cover artist) is truly a high point in my comic book-making career.”

The Lost Boys’ comic goes on sale this October.
