Variety report that Screen Gems and parent company Sony have pushed back ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ from its original Halloween 2016 release date to New Year 2017.

The film will now open in the US on 6 January 2017, whilst UK audiences can expect it on 3 February 2017.

‘Blood Wars’ is the fifth installment in the sci-fi action horror series, which began with Len Wiseman’s 2003 movie ‘Underworld,’ centred on a war between vampires and werewolves.

The mythology was developed in 2006 follow-up ‘Underworld: Evolution,’ then Beckinsale sat out 2009 prequel ‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,’ before returning for 2012 sequel ‘Underworld: Awakenings.’

The series has grossed over $458 million worldwide at the box office thus far.

‘Blood Wars’ is the directorial debut of experienced cinematographer Anna Foerster, and will co-star Theo James, Trent Garrett, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James and Charles Dance.

There have been rumours that this could be Beckinsale’s final appearance in the series, and may see her pass the torch to a new main protagonist.

Plans for a possible ‘Underworld’ TV series have also been reported.
