'The Mandalorian' director Bryce Dallas Howard got expert 'Star Wars' advice from George Lucas

Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about directing an episode of The Mandalorian, the Star Wars spin-off that is premiering on Disney + later this year, revealing that she got some expert advice from George Lucas.

Howard admitted that Lucas didn’t actually deliver his tip first-hand, instead it was given by proxy courtesy of her father Ron Howard, who was directed by Lucas in 1973’s American Graffiti and also just so happened to oversee 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Ron Howard recalled to Bryce Dallas Howard that during production on 1988’s Willow, which he directed and Lucas wrote and produced, he was struggling to bring together the narrative on set, which is when Lucas advised him to let storyboard artist David Lowery “take a crack at it.”

“That really is the essence of collaboration and the power of collaboration,” Howard told Variety.

“The people are just all in, give everything, own it, own the process themselves, and then are like, ‘Your turn.’ It is so exhilarating and grounding and it doesn’t ever get about the ego, because it’s all about Star Wars, which it needs to be.”

Howard was also lucky enough to be on set when her father directed Solo, during which time she also learnt some things that became invaluable during production on The Mandalorian.

“What he just kept saying again and again and again… ‘This is just the most incredible sandbox that you will ever get the opportunity to play in’.”

We’ll get to see what she achieves with The Mandalorian when it premieres in the US on Disney + on November 12, although we’re still waiting for news of its UK release.
