Thor 3's Ragnarok rumoured to be Mad Max & Gladiator-style planet

In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is a great battle that results in the deaths of major figures like Odin and Loki. In Marvel’s upcoming sequel ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, it may mean something else.

Since it was announced, fans have assumed the film was named after this and the famed comic book story arc, but a new report has suggested its also the name of a planet central to the plot.

Schmoes Know has reported that Ragnarok is the planet on which Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk are stranded when they’re forced into gladiatorial combat.

This much we basically already knew, despite the project being shrouded in secrecy. There’s more though, so be warned, light spoilers ahead!

Schmoes reports that Ragnarok will have a 'Gladiator’ meets 'Mad Max’ aesthetic, and will be the setting of arenas the two Avengers must fight through to escape.

These arenas are overseen by Jeff Goldblum’s The Grandmaster, and its also where our heroes will meet other characters, including Tessa Thompson Valkyrie and Karl Urban’s Skurge, believed to be The Grandmaster’s enforcer.

Based on what we know about Taika Waititi’s film, this certainly makes sense, and it sounds like something ripe with opportunities for references and cameos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s galactic inhabitants.

A 'Gladiator’ and 'Mad Max’ feel also has us very excited, for reasons that should be obvious to everyone.

It seems that if this is where the film’s second act takes place, then the first act will set up a reason for Thor to have to escape the planet in the hurry and the third will see some major heroics.

That pressing need will probably have something to do with Tom Hiddleston’s returning Loki and Cate Blanchett’s debuting villain Hela.

So how will the Earth-bound scenes fit in? We’ll have to wait until 'Thor: Ragnarok’ is released on 27 October 2017 to find out.
