Unmade Independence Day Sequel Plot Revealed... And It Was Terrible
Long before the soon-to-be released ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’, there were plans for another sequel to the 1996 sci-fi actioner.
In fact, there were plans in place as far back as 2001.
But now director Roland Emmerich has revealed the plot behind it – and let’s just say it was probably for the best that it didn’t end up getting made.
“It was after 9/11 and Dean (Devlin, the movie’s producer) and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn’t work,” he told Empire.
“There’s still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that. We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say 'we come in peace’ and that was it.
“It was just too weak an idea and we didn’t really want to do it.
“It didn’t have an 'Independence Day’ feel. Only the alien ship was destroyed!”
Indeed, not nearly enough carnage!
Emmerich also added that if all goes well with this long-awaited second movie, there’s the possibility of a third.
“If it’s successful enough, yes, because it’s set up for a sequel,” he said. “In 20 years? No, I wouldn’t want to make it with a Zimmer frame!”
The movie sees the return of Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox’s characters, alongside incoming talent Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
It’s out across the UK on June 23.
