Lord of the Rings fans are feasting well right now with the return of The Rings of Power next week and a new movie hitting cinemas this Christmas.

We have now been treated to the first trailer for anime movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, directed by award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, produced by Philippa Boyens and executive produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh.

Set 183 years before the events of The Hobbit, the new movie chronicles the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.

As shown in the trailer, Helm made the error of killing Freca, a local lord of Rohan, when he proposed a marriage between his son Wulf and Helm's daughter Héra, leading to Wulf to seek revenge for his father's death.

During a last stand in the ancient stronghold of Hornburg, later known as Helm's Deep, Helm's daughter Héra finds the will to lead the resistance against Wulf and his Dunlending army.

The trailer promises that we can still expect to see the epic battles we're used to in Lord of the Rings movies, now realised in spectacular animation, along with some stirring last-minute speeches.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim features a voice cast including Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise as Héra and Luke Pasqualino as Wulf. Other cast members include Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Shaun Dooley and Bilal Hasna.

The movie will be released in cinemas on December 13, so you could do a double-bill with Kraven the Hunter if you so wished.

To provide a link to the original trilogy, Miranda Otto reprises her role as Éowyn, shieldmaiden of Rohan, to narrate the tale.

We hear a glimpse of that in the trailer as she sets the scene: "All Middle-earth knows the tale of the war of the ring, but 200 years before that, there was an older tale."

The movie was originally set to be released in April 2024 before being shifted to its December 13 release. Every previous Lord of the Rings movie, including The Hobbit trilogy, was released pre-Christmas so it's a delay that felt right.

We're also set to get a new series of live-action Lord of the Rings movies, starting with The Hunt for Gollum in 2026. The new movie will bring back Andy Serkis as Gollum, with Serkis also directing.
