Watch the trailer for John Goodman's gripping new BBC drama, 'Black Earth Rising'
BBC and Netflix have dropped the first trailer for their upcoming co-production Black Earth Rising starring John Goodman, Michaela Coel and Harriet Walter.
Written and directed by industry veteran and BAFTA-winner Hugo Blick (The Honourable Woman, Sensitive Skin, The Shadow Line) Black Earth Rising is an “international thriller about the prosecution of international war crimes and the West’s relationship with contemporary Africa.”
Coel (Chewing Gum) stars as Kate Ashby, rescued from the Rwandan genocide as a child and raised by internationally renowned British prosecutor Eve Ashby (Harriet Walter – The Crown, Atonement) . Following in her mother’s footsteps as a legal investigator, she is mortified and heartbroken when she discovers that both her employer – lawyer Michael Ennis (John Goodman – Roseanne, The Big Lebowski) and Eve – are prosecuting an African militia leader.
The prominent militia leader once helped liberate Kate’s former Congo community from the genocide. And her mother’s decision to prosecute him threatens to permanently damage their once seemingly unbreakable bond. Thrown into a twisted and disturbing world, all three characters embark on a “journey that will upend their lives forever.”
An eight-part series, Black Earth Rising will premiere in September on BBC Two, and on Netflix internationally.
