What to watch: The best movies new to streaming from Extraction 2 to The Lost King

Wondering what to watch this weekend? As we inch closer to the longest day of the year, streaming services are bringing new films to their platforms for subscribers to enjoy.

From big budget blockbusters on Netflix to dramas set around the uncovering of King Richard III's body in 2012 on Sky, there's something for everyone on TV this week.

Extraction 2 | Netflix

Chris Hemsworth's action-packed Netflix hit Extraction is back for a second round, with the Thor star once again portraying Commando Tyler Rake.

This time around, Rake is embarking on a dangerous mission that will see him try and help locate the imprisoned family of a ruthless gangster.

In 2012, many were shocked when the remains of King Richard III, one of the most notorious monarchs in history, were discovered underneath a car park in Leicester.

These events were dramatised in The Lost King, which stars Steve Coogan, Sally Hawkins and Harry Lloyd. It follows Philippa Langley (Hawkins) and her quest to find King Richard III's remains, while Lloyd plays the royal as it simultaneously examines his short-lived reign.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent | Netflix (pick of the week)

Nicholas Cage plays a fictional version of himself in this highly amusing action comedy also starring Pedro Pascal as one of the actor's biggest fans, playboy billionaire Javi Gutierrez.

Cage's fictional self accepted an offer of $1 million in order to be the guest of honour at Javi's birthday party, but the CIA soon task him with working undercover to determine if the billionaire is behind the kidnapping of a politician.

It's a whacky, wild ride with fun performances from its lead cast, who relish at the chance to play their characters as outlandishly as possible.

Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee is being celebrated in a new documentary film on Disney+ which will examine his life and legacy in pop culture.

Given how superhero movies are dominating the box office, and have done so for years, it is an apt time to look back at one of the people to start it all with comic books.

The French Connection | BBC Two/BBC iPlayer

Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider star in neo-noir film The French Connection, which will air on BBC Two and be available on iPlayer this week.

The 1971 flick sees Hackman and Scheider play NYPD cops trying to take down a drug ring in the Big Apple, the film earned five Academy Awards in 1972, including for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director for William Friedkin.

The best films to watch on TV this weekend

While there are a number of films coming to streaming, there are plenty of old favourites and indie hits that viewers may well have not had the chance to see and they can now enjoy it on terrestrial TV.

Robert De Niro's powerful, no-holds-barred Vietnam war film The Deer Hunter will be screening on BBC One on Saturday, 17 June, while Damien Chazelle's sci-fi hit First Man, which sees Ryan Gosling play Neil Armstrong, will air on Channel 4 at 12:10 am.

Sunday's listings will also see James Bond classic Live and Let Die screen on ITV1, and on BBC 3 Taylor Russell's indie film Waves will be screened.
