Willem Dafoe’s Justice League role expanded in Aquaman

It looks as though ‘Aquaman’ will get a lot more Willem Dafoe…

During an interview with The Guardian, the 61-year-old actor revealed that his upcoming role in ‘Justice League’ is just the beginning… and will be a lot bigger in Aquaman’s solo movie.

“Well, Justice League is very particular because it’s an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in Aquaman,” he said.

But who is he playing?

We already know that Willem Dafoe will be joining ‘Justice League’ as Nuidis Vulko - an Atlantean politician and trusted advisor of Aquaman. A long-time recurring character in the ‘Aquaman’ comic books, it looks as though his role is likely just a cameo in ‘Justice League’.

But it sounds like it’s getting beefed up for ‘Aquaman’.

Obviously, that makes a lot of sense. Although it’s great to see Aquaman’s supporting cast getting some love in the upcoming ‘Justice League’ movie, there’s already a pretty large cast. And that’s just with the primary DC superheroes. We just don’t have the screen time to spend with every supporting character.

And that’s where the ‘Aquaman’ movie will fill in the gaps.

Obviously, Dafoe is no stranger to taking on comic book roles.

After appearing in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ as Norman Osborn (aka the Green Goblin), he reprised the role as a cameo in both ‘Spider-Man 2’ and ‘Spider-Man 3’. Now, he says comic book movies are very different.

“[Spider-Man] was interesting because, as big as that film was, Sam Raimi didn’t have a formula,” he said. “I think with Justice League I think they’re trying to play around with the formula. Zac Snyder certainly has a heavy stamp on it. But Spider-Man was a very personal film to Sam. He really believed in the story. It was dear to him. It was fun to see a big studio film like that be so personal. I mean, nothing’s perfect, but it’s a good film.”

Will his role in ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Justice League’ top his stint as Norman Osborn?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But his Green Goblin was just awesome.

‘Justice League’ heads to cinemas on 17 November 2017.
