Wolfgang Van Halen Says Getting Ready for Oscars Was 'More Stressful' Than His Own Wedding (Exclusive)

Van Halen played guitar on 'I'm Just Ken,' which was nominated for Best Original Song at Sunday's awards ceremony

Wolfgang Van Halen says preparing for the Oscars was "more stressful" than his wedding.

While chatting with PEOPLE on the Academy Awards red carpet on Sunday, Van Halen, 32, and his wife, Andraia Allsop, joked about how they found that getting ready to attend Hollywood's biggest night had them more frazzled than their October 2023 nuptials.

"It actually felt like we were getting ready for our wedding today," Allsop said of the lead-up to the awards ceremony.

Van Halen laughingly agreed with his wife, adding, "I think it was more stressful getting ready today."

The Mammoth WVH frontman plays guitar on Barbie's "I'm Just Ken" hit, which was nominated for Best Original Song.

As for newlywed life with Allsop, the musician — who is the son Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli — told PEOPLE that not much has changed since the couple tied the knot at their Los Angeles home last fall, surrounded by 90 loved ones.

"It's the same, and I think that's good. Because it shouldn't be any different if you find the right person, right?" he said.

The pair was joined on the red carpet by Bertinelli, 63, who took a moment to express her pride and excitement about her son's Oscars moment.

"I'm excited! I'm here to support Wolfie, the Barbie movie, because Wolfie's all throughout it. He did a lot of work with [soundtrack producer] Mark [Ronson] for two days, and I'm really proud of him so I want to support him," she gushed. "And the movie was kickass, so we're just going to say that."

She said she gets a little thrill every time she watches the Greta Gerwig-led film. "It's so fun because I watch the movie and I hear Wolfie all throughout the chase scene, I hear Wolfie all throughout the Ken fight scene, and it's just like, 'That's my boy!' "

Wolfgang described attending the Oscars as "a magical night." "I'm happy to be here, very happy to be part of this and support my buddy Mark," he added.

Though "I'm Just Ken" did not win, another Barbie song did — Billie Eilish and Finneas' "What Was I Made For?"

Ahead of their wedding last year, Wolfgang and Allsop opened up to PEOPLE about their vision for their special day, with Allsop explaining that "our goal was just to bring all of our closest family and friends together."

"The past few years, not only with the world, but also with personal tragedies, haven't been the easiest, but we wanted to create this wedding as a celebration not only just for us to get married, but a celebration for the people we love," she explained.

They chose to marry at home — their ceremony took place in their living room, followed by a backyard reception — so they could "have privacy and just have our moment together with everyone," Allsop added.

Wolfgang said their wedding was "kind of just a formality" since they already felt like they were married after having been together for eight years. "We are so already married that it's like, well, yeah, might as well make it official, because we already are," he explained.
