Andrew Lloyd Webber for School of Rock musical

West End legend buys up the rights for the 2003 Richard Linklater comedy

Andrew Lloyd Webber is planning to turn the Jack Black film 'School of Rock' into a west end musical.

Speaking on CBC Radio, he revealed his plans to bring the film to the stage.

“Another thing I've just got the rights to, which I'm very excited about – there may be some songs from me but it's also got songs in it as it stands – is the movie 'School of Rock',” he said.

He also spoke about his plans to turn the story of Stephen Ward, the doctor who introduced the MP John Profumo to Christine Keeler but later committed suicide, into a 'chamber musical'.

“I will go from Stephen Ward, which is really going to be sort of a chamber musical, to a musical about kids playing the guitar,” he added.

So far, this is all Lloyd Webber has said on the project, but it would certainly fit among the 'juke box' musicals which have become vastly popular in recent years, from 'We Will Rock You' to 'Rock of Ages'.

The film, directed by Richard Linklater, was released in 2003, with Jack Black starring as debt-stricken musician Dewey Finn, who poses as a supply teacher and enters his class into a battle of the bands in order to win money to pay his rent.
