Should The Brutalist win Best Picture Oscar after AI controversy? Have your say
Yahoo wants to know what you think about The Brutalist and its use of AI technology. Should it still be the favourite for Best Picture at the Oscars?
Just a few weeks ago, The Brutalist looked like a very safe bet to walk away from the Oscars with Best Picture firmly in its grasp. Indeed, when the Oscar nominations were unveiled, The Brutalist managed a very impressive 10 nominations — second only to Emilia Pérez and its haul of 13.
But now, the Oscars success of Brady Corbet's epic tale of the 'American dream' and the immigrant experience looks like less of a sure thing. The reason for that is a controversy around AI, which is very much a hot-button issue in Hollywood. After all, it was one of the key sticking points that led to writers and, later, actors taking strike action in 2023.
The Brutalist deployed AI technology from a company called Respeecher — which also worked on Emilia Pérez — to help stiffen up the Hungarian accents used by lead actor Adrien Brody and his co-star Felicity Jones in the film.
"We were very careful about keeping their performances. It's mainly just replacing letters here and there," editor Dávid Jancso told RedShark News. "You can do this in ProTools yourself, but we had so much dialogue in Hungarian that we really needed to speed up the process otherwise we'd still be in post.”
AI was also briefly deployed for a series of architectural drawings glimpsed during the film's final epilogue scenes. “It is controversial in the industry to talk about AI, but it shouldn't be,” said Jancso. “We should be having a very open discussion about what tools AI can provide us with. There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn't been done before. It just makes the process a lot faster."
This is a febrile and complex conversation that will run and run, so we at Yahoo want to know what you think about it. Should The Brutalist's use of AI prevent it from winning the top prize at the Oscars?
