Four new posters unveiled for Spike Lee's Oldboy

While audiences prepare themselves for Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park Chan-wook's classic horror Old Boy, the promotional material keeps coming - this time in the form of four rather stylish new posters.

Oldboy sees Josh Brolin's character Joe held captive in a motel room for 20 years. When he is released, he has just a few days to find out who kidnapped him and why.

Featuring references to the infamous hammer fight, the art explicitly tells audiences what to expect from the film. From imagery of blood-red rain, to tag lines "Find the truth and make it hurt," and painful-looking tally marks etched into the back of Brolin's hand.

Perhaps the creepiest poster depicts an image from each year of Joe's incarceration, with the text: "You're watching Joe Doucett. He's desperate to know why I locked him in this room for 20 years. But the question he should ask is, why did I set him free?"

Spike Lee recently revealed that Brolin sought the original director's permission before signing up to make the movie.

The director told Collider: "I don’t know about the specific details, but he did meet with Park because Josh wanted his blessing.  Park said, 'I don’t think it’s a good idea if Josh is not going to do the film.' Park also told Josh that, 'Look, you have my blessing. But don’t try to redo what we did.  Make your own film.'  And that was my thinking from the beginning… That was our approach: to know that you have something that’s great, and then, in full respect of that source, just make it your own.  That was the mindset."

Lee went on to praise his star, saying: "We get along great".

"Josh is a great, great actor.  I love him.  He loves me.  We get along great.  And we want to work together many more times.  It doesn’t really happen that often, but sometimes we didn’t have to speak because we were thinking the same thing.  We had the same outlook.  We knew the film we wanted to make.  So it was a wonderful experience."

Oldboy hits cinemas on December 6.
