Is Mel Gibson on for Expendables 3?

Sylvester Stallone could be teeing up Mel Gibson for 'The Expendables 3'.

Sly, an avid Twitter user, has previously dropped hints via his social networking as to who is lining up for the action sequel.

The latest hint, while far from an official announcement, merely says: “Mad Max vs Barney Ross...”.

Ross is Sly's character in the 'Expendables' movies, and with veteran action stars being very much the order of the day for the films, this is hardly a subtle hint and one which Stallone's followers have taken as it appears to have been intended.

It was rumoured that the 'Lethal Weapon' legend was in talks for the role of the film's villain last month, contradicting comments by actor Tom Sizemore who has previously said he was being lined-up for that role.

If Gibson is to join the film, he'll be among muscle-bound action company.

Set up for the third film already are Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Milla Jovovich and Dolph Lundgren.

Meanwhile, rumoured to be involved are Bruce Willis and Steven Seagal.

It's due out on August 15, 2014.
