June US box office record smashed by Man of Steel

Superman's return nets a tidy $125 million in one weekend

Despite lukewarm critical reactions, it seems that America along with the rest of the world is back in love with Metropolis' favourite resident. 'Man of Steel' has broken all June box office records by taking $125 million between Thursday night and Sunday.

It replaces previous June record-holder 'Toy Story 3,' which took an opening $110.3 million in June 2010. It also captured 60 percent of the Stateside market.

Warner Brothers say that the re-versioning of the story of the superhero from Krypton took $113 million between Friday and Sunday, while it grossed an extra $71.6 million from overseas territories.

This makes 'Man of Steel' the 18th largest opening of all time, behind 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End'  which took $114.7 million.

The other big success story of the weekend in US theatres was Seth Rogen and James Franco's 'This Is The End', the apocalyptic comedy from Sony, which took nearly $21 million. It cost only $32 million to make, so it should easily recoup costs.
