Jurassic Park 4 gets a director

Helmsman of Safety Not Guaranteed will make a new film in the dino franchise

Colin Trevorrow will direct 'Jurassic Park IV', it's been confirmed.

The man behind indie hit 'Safety Not Guaranteed' and the forthcoming remake of 'Flight of the Navigator' was among those thought to be in the running to direct 'Star Wars VII'.

He even teased as much last year, saying: “For all those who love the mythology that I will be tackling, trust that I love it as much as you do. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck.”

It appears that the 'mythology' he was speaking of was dinosaur-based, rather than space and light sabre-based.

Reports also suggest that shooting is set to begin on the awaited sequel – 'Jurassic Park 3' came out in 2001 – as soon as next month.

It's been penned by husband and wife screenwriting team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the pair behind 'Rise of the Planet of The Apes', while Steven Spielberg will executive produce.

While there's no word on cast yet, there's been some vague comment on plot from 'Jurassic Park III' director Joe Johnston, who promises something new for the franchise.

“Well, there is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it’s nothing like the first three. It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction,” he told Ain't It Cool News.

He added in 2010: “It's going to be unlike anything you've seen. It breaks away from the first three-it's essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy. It's going to be done in a completely different way. That's pretty much all I can tell you.”

Though the production was thrown into doubt the same year, with consultant palaeontologist Jack Horner saying the project was 'dead', a picture tweeted by Theme Park Adventure magazine showed that the production was back on the slate at Universal Studios.

Then in summer last year, Spielberg and Universal officially confirmed it was planning to release the sequel.

A release date of June 14, 2014 is in place.
