Weisz and Sheen are also joined by solid US support actor Barry Pepper and Amanda Peet on the cutting room floor.

The film is set to debut at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Weisz reportedly said of her exclusion from the final cut: “I had the experience of working with him (Terrence) but I will not have the pleasure of seeing my work,” while a source told Deadline: “It's just the way Terry works; it's not a reflection on anything other than the story.”

Malick has long been known for cutting performances from his films.

In his 1998 war epic 'The Thin Red Line', a swathe of actors were cut, including Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman, Bill Pulman, Lukas Haas, Jason Patric, Viggo Mortensen and Mickey Rourke.

Not cut from the production, however, are Sheen's partner Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko and Javier Bardem, who star in the film.

Affleck plays a man who reconnects with a woman from his hometown after his marriage breaks down.
