Top Gun stars to voice fighter jets in cartoon Planes

Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards sign on for the new Disney animation

The stars of 'Top Gun' are to reunite at last for Disney's new animation 'Planes'.

In a smart bit of casting Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards, who played Ice Man and Goose in the sweaty 80s actioner, will voice two fighter jets called Bravo and Echo in the forthcoming film – a spin-off of Pixar's 'Cars' franchise.

They join an emerging cast, which includes John Cleese, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stacy Keach, Cedric The Entertainer, Teri Hatcher and Sinbad.

US stand-up Dane Cook will lead the cast.

He plays Dusty, who dreams of being a racing plane but isn't built for it, and then turns to a naval aviator for help in beating the racing circuit champ.

Each of the plane characters, pictures of which have been released, appear to represent different countries.

It opens in August in the US.
