Whedon signs up for Avengers 2

Buffy creator will also write a TV series for Marvel studios as part of the deal

Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the sequel to 'The Avengers'.

It's hoped that the man behind hits like 'Buffy' and cult sci-fi 'Firefly' will be able to replicate the success of the $1.46 billion (£935 million) smash, now the third biggest film of all time.

He's also signed on for a TV series with the studio, which should extend the reach of some of the Marvel Comics characters.

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015,” read a statement from Marvel Studios.

“As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s 'The Avengers 2' as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

As if to show his versatility, Whedon has just wrapped on directing a film version of Shakespeare's comedy 'Much Ado About Nothing'.
