All-Male Ghostbusters Spin-Off Still On?

So, if you’ve been following the state of all things Ghostbuster of late (and you can be forgiven if you’re struggling to keep up), you’ll know that Sony currently have an all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot in production with Paul Feig directing - but that there has also been word of an all-male spin-off concurrently in the works at Sony.

Early word was that Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt were in Sony’s sights to star, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing - but with Pratt flatly denying any involvement and the Russos a bit too busy with Marvel, the only one of those names to be officially linked was Tatum. However, his producing partner Reid Carolin recently hinted they may no longer be involved.

Even so, it doesn’t look like the all-male ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-off (reported to be entitled ‘Ghostcorps’) is necessarily dead, as screenwriter Drew Pearce confirms to MTV News that he’s working on a script.

Says Pearce, “I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks… Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did ’Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and are doing ’Civil War’ at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!”

Again, just when the Russos are meant to have time to take this project on isn’t clear, given they’re set to follow ‘Captain America: Civil War’ with the epic two-volume ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ which should keep them busy until 2019 - but we dare say Pearce knows the situation better than we do.

As for whether it is intended as a Tatum/Pratt vehicle, Pearce says, “That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project… Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.”

Pearce also confirms that he, for one, is approaching the project as though it takes place within the same universe as Paul Feig’s film - although he stresses this is not his call to make.

“My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same ’Ghostbusters’ universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want. Standing here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.”

Of course, the existence of a script alone does not confirm a movie will get made - but it is enough to mean we shouldn’t rule the all-male ‘Ghostbusters’ spin-off out just yet.

All we do know is that Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ is set to hit UK cinemas on 15 July 2016.
