Ant-Man star Judy Greer's new movie Aporia has debuted to very positive reviews, landing a 100% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sci-fi film follows a woman named Sophie (Greer) who is grieving the death of her husband in a drunk-driving accident, and has other mounting problems in her life.

However, her husband's best friend Jabir (Payman Maadi) reveals he has been building a time-bending machine that could restore her former life, which leads to a big choice and unforseeable consequences.

Following its premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, the first reviews for Aporia have been very strong, with particular praise towards the performances and premise.

Here's what critics have been saying:

Variety

"The concept provides enough narrative drive to prevent Aporia from settling into mere depressing kitchen-sink realism. While it may not stress fear or fancy as much as most such comparable tales, this quasi-scientific fiction nonetheless easily holds us in suspense, wondering just where so much monkeying with the time-space continuum will lead."

Nerdist

"It’s not the highest concept movie, and it has a few rough spots with exceedingly obvious ADR’d lines, but the performances and the premise do wonders to keep the audience invested, and make them care. Aporia really worked for me. If you go on for big moral philosophy concepts, and like Greer and Gathegi as much as you should, then it’ll work for you too."

ScreenDaily

"For his third film, writer/director Jared Moshe channels these theoretical moral conundrums into a modest, tightly-paced drama about one grieving woman who is given the chance to undo her husband’s death.

"Moshe is not the first filmmaker to grapple with theories surrounding the manipulation of the fabric of time but his intimate approach, coupled with strong performances, make this an intelligent homespun take on a familiar subject."

Collider

"Offering a unique science fiction twist on a familiar story, Aporia is a complex emotional drama that uses the lens of time travel to explore interpersonal relationships and moral quandaries about what it means to exist.

"While the narrative is rooted in the use of a sci-fi device, the film is rather light on traditional elements from the genre, relying almost entirely on the personal relationships of the characters and their shared memories to tell a story about the ripple effect one life can have on even the tiniest details of the world around them."

Aporia is set for release in the US on August 11. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
