'The Batman' composer Michael Giacchino being given 'total freedom' in his new theme music
Recent Batman movies scores have been bombastic, heavily orchestral affairs, but Michael Giacchino, who's scoring The Batman, has said that he's being given free reign to do something different.
Speaking to Collider, the composer, who's worked on movies like Jurassic World, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man: Far From Home, plus Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes with The Batman director Matt Reeves, has revealed how they're working together.

“I felt total freedom to do whatever I want,” he explained. “Matt always agreed, this is our Batman, this is our vision. In the same way that I always loved, what I still do about Batman comics and graphic novels is that each of these artist, each of these authors they take their own crack at what they want this to be. It’s their version of Batman.
“I love it when I see a graphic novel of Batman in the 1800s. To me that is cool. I love that. I’m not the kind of person that says Batman must always be this. It’s like no, why? It can be whatever the artist wants to be and it has over the years done that, many times over. I love the idea of taking something and just kind of doing our version of it.”
A snippet of Giacchino's work appeared on the brief teaser for the movie, which appeared online back in February, and it does sound markedly different to the scores by previous Batman composers Danny Elfman, who worked on Tim Burton's movies, and Hans Zimmer, who scored Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
“Matt and I love it, we watch it, we have a lot of fun with it, which makes us feel like kids again. I did go over and record that for that. We recorded a bunch of other music as well for it, a bunch of themes and things that nobody has heard yet. But they’ll all be popping up as the film gets underway again and starts getting back to production, and life gets back to normal, hopefully soon,” he went on.

Indeed, filming for the movie, which has been happening in London, Glasgow and Liverpool, is now suspended in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
It broke for two weeks from 14 March, but it's unlikely to resume as planned as the country remains on lockdown.
Starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, it's currently due for release in June, 2021.
