Ben Affleck’s The Batman will not feature Catwoman

Early word is that Ben Affleck’s upcoming Batman solo movie may be something of a who’s-who of the Dark Knight’s greatest adversaries – but it seems one key character will not be making an appearance.

According to journalist Erik Davis, we won’t be seeing Catwoman in ‘The Batman.’

Fandango and Movies.com editor Davis broke the news via Twitter, relaying a conversation with actress Sienna Miller, who appears in Affleck’s latest directorial effort ‘Live By Night.’

Davis added later that as Miller is not writing ‘The Batman’ herself, we shouldn’t “take her word as bond.”

A sometime enemy, sometime ally of Batman, Catwoman has long been one of the most popular DC characters.

She’s appeared on the big screen four times, portrayed by Lee Meriwether in ‘Batman: the Movie’ (1966), Michelle Pfieffer in ‘Batman Returns’ (1992), Halle Berry in ‘Catwoman’ (2004), and Anne Hathaway in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012).

With the DC Extended Universe showing no sign of slowing down, it seems inevitable a new Catwoman will be introduced at some point; if not in ‘The Batman,’ perhaps in the as-yet untitled female-driven DC movie produced by Margot Robbie, set to feature Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey.

As well as directing and playing the lead, Affleck is co-writing ‘The Batman’ with Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics.

Little is known about the film at present other than that it will co-star Joe Manganeillo as villain Deathstroke, whilst Jeremy Irons and JK Simmons will likely reprise their roles as Alfred and Commissioner Gordon (Simmons will make his debut in this role in ‘Justice League’).

Rumour has it that the film may see Batman trapped in Arkham Asylum, facing off against a slew of his greatest foes, but this is not confirmed.

Some doubt was also cast over the state of the project by author Bret Easton Ellis, who recently said that friends at Warner Bros tell him there are “serious problems with the script.”

Still, ‘The Batman’ remains in relatively early development, with no release date confirmed at present.
