Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F director Mark Molloy has explained the movie's unexpected Happy Gilmore cameo.
The new instalment in the action franchise includes Christopher McDonald – who played the villainous Shooter McGavin in the 1996 Adam Sandler golf comedy – appearing briefly as an irate golfer on a course.
While he is only credited as 'golfer' in Axel F, fans will no doubt get the reference, and Molloy has now revealed in a new interview that he wanted to "have some fun" when it came down to casting the appearance.

"I was talking with Mary Vernieu, our casting director, about the golfer role that we knew we had, and I said, 'I’d love a great cameo,'" he recalled to The Hollywood Reporter.
"So we started talking about it, and then we were like, 'Christopher McDonald!? Oh, yes! That would be amazing.'
"And fans love it. I’ve heard the reaction when people see Chris come on the screen, and it’s just a really fun cameo. So there’s no bigger story behind it, apart from me wanting to have some fun."
The director also admitted that he had "no idea" at the time that a Happy Gilmore sequel was in the works, which will likely see McDonald return as McGavin.

The second Happy Gilmore movie was confirmed back in May, with Sandler set to reprise his role as the titular character on Netflix.
The streamer is also behind the new Beverly Hills Cop movie, which sees Eddie Murphy return as police officer Axel Foley after 30 years.
The film has debuted to a fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating, currently sitting at 67% on the review aggregator, though Digital Spy said in our review that it "fails to recapture the magic of the first movie".
