Black Adam: Aldis Hodge teases Justice Society's links to classic DC characters

Watch: Aldis Hodge on the introduction of the Justice Society in Black Adam

In new superhero movie Black Adam (in IMAX and cinemas Friday) the Justice League are out and the Justice Society – led by Aldis Hodge’s winged warrior, Carter Hall aka Hawkman – are in.

“DC fans know Hawkman has been part of the JSA and the Justice League in the history of the comics”, says Hodge.

“But the thing that I love about this is that we get to introduce the JSA. We get to show the inception of where it all started. Because you know the JSA is the very first superhero team in comic books. We’re the OG’s! And we get to build that up.”

Naturally, now that Hawkman has been introduced to the DCEU, questions concerning whether he’s already established a relationship with Superman, Batman, and other heroes – or if he might cross paths with them in a future movie – have arisen. “We'll see who he knows along the way”, Hodge teases.

One hero Hawkman does get to interact with over the course of Black Adam is Kent Nelson – better known as the formidable sorcerer Doctor Fate – who is played by Pierce Brosnan.

“For me to play Kent Nelson, you go to your own kind of strength as a man”, the former James Bond actor says. “You try to keep it as simple as possible, otherwise you will be overwhelmed by it.”

For Brosnan, the script gave him all he needed to unlock his portrayal of the fan-favourite magician. “There's so much that is given to you in the text”, he says.

“So much is given to you in the characters that surround you. If you keep it as sincere and as honest as possible for your own emotions, that allows you to kind of pull back a little bit and just let it unfold.”

Hodge gets to don some flashy gear when Hawkman is in action, and though his full superhero regalia is a CGI creation, the (very shiny) helmet of Doctor Fate is also a prop that Brosnan gets to hold at various points in the movie.

Did either actor get to keep anything as mementos? “I wasn't successful because they needed to do reshoots”, Hodge laments. If Black Adam is a hit for Warner Bros., maybe he’ll get another chance if a sequel is green-lit.

Black Adam is heading to UK cinemas and IMAX on 20 October. Watch a trailer below.
