Scarlett Johansson has given new details about what we can expect from the Black Widow movie, and basically everything she has to say is super intriguing.
Asked by MTV if she’d spoken to director Cate Shortland and producer Kevin Feige about what she wanted from the movie, the actress replied, “I had time to think about it.”
“One, I want the film to do really well, and for people to enjoy it, for it to have success. Two, I want it to be fulfilling for fans of Marvel and fans of the character, and the third thing is I want to be the same person that I’ve been throughout these 10 years.
“Just because it’s a standalone doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be grounded in the history of the character. I want you to feel the character’s carrying the weight of all we know. That’s what I think we’re doing.”
Now, spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow, but obviously this is probably the most surprising possible thing Johansson could have said about the movie, which we totally assumed would be a prequel.
Mainly because, you know, Johansson’s character ended her ten year run in the MCU by dying at the bottom of a big pit in the pursuit of an Infinity Stone.
As for the tone of the movie, Johansson had some slightly shocking reference points. Black Widow’s ostensibly a spy thriller, so we were expecting to hear about touchstones like James Bond and maybe Bourne - but not so.
“It’s pretty gritty, but it’s also surprising. It’s in its own genre. Some of the movies we talked about were The Fugitive, Logan, Terminator 2…”
With MTV surprised by the influences, Scarlett responded to a compliment about the film’s inspirations by joking, “what do you think we’re going to bring you, crap?”
Black Widow will be in UK cinemas on 1 May 2020.
