Yahoo Movies Hathaway’s full Catwoman outfit revealed
Stunning pictures of Anne Hathaway wearing the Catwoman outfit have emerged from the set of 'The Dark Knight Rises'.
She'd already been spotted in partial Catwoman gear perched on top of the Batpod, but this is the first time we've seen the sleek outfit in its entirety.
When the first picture was released, many fans were dismayed by the costume. They objected to the goggles, the lack of mask and, worst of all, the absence of ears.
This new pic should put those fears to rest, with a mask now present. Those goggles appear to double as cat ears as well. There's still no whiskers though.
The character, real name Selina Kyle, was first made famous outside the comics by Julie Newmar (later Eartha Kitt and Lee Meriwether for the film spin-off) in the camp 1960s TV series. Her costume was a kitsch purple number and featured a gold necklace and belt.
In contrast, Michelle Pfeiffer's catsuit from the 1992 flick 'Batman Returns' was an iconic all-black vinyl affair that covered almost her entire face. She also had a whip.
The Halle Berry version in the much-derided 'Catwoman' movie was far more revealing with the top-half essentially a black leather bra and a couple of belts.
Hathaway's version is more functional and - dare we say it - less sexy than previous incarnations. For a skin-tight leather catsuit anyway.
This is perhaps not surprising given the realistic vibe of the recent 'Batman' films directed by Christopher Nolan. All tried to give plausible explanations for the character's origins and we would expect the same for Catwoman.
In previous movies the character's back story has deviated considerably from the one written by Bob Kane for the original comics. In 'Batman Returns' Selina Kyle was a lonely secretary who was mysteriously revived by a group of alley cats after she was pushed out of the window by her evil boss. She gains a superpower: nine lives.
The Halle Berry version also saw the character re-imagined as a dowdy office worker — this time a graphic designer in a cosmetic company. She is transformed into Catwoman by the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet (honestly) after another near-death experience. Yet again she has superpowers.
In contrast it's likely the Hathaway version will be much closer to Bob Kane's original character: a mysterious burglar and jewel thief who shares a romantic spark with Batman, though we don't know for sure.
The plot for 'The Dark Knight Rises' is currently a closely-guarded secret, but we do know that Tom Hardy plays supervillain Bane, Christian Bale is back as Batman and Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman are co-starring.
The film is released in July 2012.
