Barbie is no longer the number 1 film at the US box office.

DC's newest superhero movie Blue Beetle has finally managed to dethrone the pastel pink comedy, which had ruled the pack for a month.

It was a pretty close call, however, as Variety reports that Blue Beetle's opening weekend takings are about $25.4 million, compared to the $21.5 million Barbie made in its fifth weekend.

Blue Beetle's weekend takings are not only lower than projected, but also quite low for the DC Extended Universe continuity that began in 2013 with Man of Steel.

The film has definitely had a better opening weekend than Wonder Woman 1984 did, with its $16.7 million, but looks like it's done slightly worse than The Suicide Squad, with its $26.2 million. Those films were also released during the pandemic, while Blue Beetle's promotion was limited.

As has become apparent this year though, opening weekends aren't necessarily the be all and end all when it comes to a film's overall performance at the box office.

DC's Black Adam and The Flash had made $67 million and $55.1 million at the US box office in their respective opening weekends, which are pretty solid (even if The Flash performed below expectations).

However, Black Adam made less than $400 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run, while The Flash seems to be sitting around $269 million.

Meanwhile, Elemental earned $29.5 million in the US over its opening weekend, which is fairly low for Pixar, but consistently hung around the top 10 for a while and has made nearly $450 million worldwide.

Blue Beetle is out in cinemas now.
