Deadpool’s Avenger’s Link Revealed

It looks as though ‘Deadpool’ is a lot closer to ‘The Avengers’ than we thought…

During the climactic moments of the recently released ‘Deadpool’ movie, fans noticed that the setting looked awfully familiar – almost exactly like the Helicarrier from Marvel’s very own ‘Avengers Assembled’.

And it looks as though it was no accident.

The folks at io9 have discovered that concept artist Emmanuel Shiu was tasked with bringing this scene to life… and he had a rather specific design brief.

“Yup, that’s a helicarrier,” they explain. “The flying aircraft carriers used by SHIELD and various others in the Marvel universe. At the end of the movie, Deadpool fights Ajax and his crew on top of a partially disassembled helicarrier.”

Unfortanately, the concept art has since been removed… but here’s how it appeared in the movie:

Of course, it was never directly referenced as a ‘helicarrier’ in the movie – after all, Marvel execs wouldn’t be too pleased about 20th Century Fox using their intellectual property – not without their permission, anyway.

But they had a rather sneaky way around that…

“Shiu tells us he was asked to redesign the helicarrier so it looked as different as possible from the one in The Avengers,” they revealed. “And it had to look like it had been taken apart in some places… Rock on!”

And this isn’t the only Marvel Easter Egg that made it into the movie.

The appearance of Ajax’s henchman, Bob certainly raised some eyebrows… and it’s already been confirmed as a subtle (and lawyer-avoiding) reference to Bob, Agent of Hydra.

“The hardcore fans will go, ‘Oh my God, is that Hydra Bob?’ but the lawyers at Marvel won’t go, 'Wait, that’s Hydra Bob, they don’t have the rights to it’,” said ‘Deadpool’ producer, Paul Wernick. “We did take some liberties.”

“Fox has a list of characters that they own and that we can use, and Simon Kinberg, who is a producer on the project, is the keeper of the X universe. So he was a great source for us in knowing what we can use, how it’s going to play into the larger story, and overall arching stories of the X universe. So between Simon and legal, they kind of guided us to what we can and can’t do or have access to, and then it was up to us to see how we were going to use those characters creatively, once we knew we really did have the rights.“

Does this mean that Deadpool will show up in the Marvel universe? Not exactly…

Let’s just hope the ‘Deadpool’ team take some similar risks in the upcoming sequel.

‘Deadpool’ opened in cinemas on 10 February 2016.
