Denis Villeneuve, the man who has been tasked with crafting the sequel to the sci-fi noir classic ‘Blade Runner’, has confirmed that ‘Blade Runner 2049’ will be R-rated.

After the release of the mesmerising first trailer for ‘Blade Runner 2049’ there were some concerns that the film could be diluted down to appeal to as large an audience as possible, something that the likes of ‘Terminator 3’ and ‘Die Hard 4’ have both done in previous years.

But the Canadian director has quickly nipped this speculation in the bud, confirming to Screen Daily that ‘Blade Runner 2049’ will be R-rated, most likely a 15 in the UK, while also admitting that this comes with its own inherent risk.

“My producers are finding it fun to remind me that it will be one of the most expensive R-rated independent feature films ever made,” Denis Villeneuve confirmed.

During the same chat Denis Villeneuve, who is currently drawing wide praise for his work on ‘Arrival’, also confirmed that the film was shot with a small amount of CGI, as he admitted that he is immediately “disengaged” when he sees a film that’s drenched in it.

Denis Villeneuve then went on to tease that there could be even more ‘Blade Runner’ films, as he admitted that he keeps on dreaming up sci-fi films that he wants to make, which suggests that he’ll be working in the genre for some years to come.

“I’m doomed, I love sci-fi. I have two more ideas now that I would love to do. [And] ‘Blade Runner’ could go on … we’ll see how this one goes,” he explained.

Denis Villeneuve is now hard at work editing ‘Blade Runner 2049’, which will be with us in October 2017.
