One of the biggest shockers for comic book movie fandom in recent months was ‘Deadpool’ director Tim Miller’s departure from the upcoming sequel to 20th Century Fox’s surprise smash hit.

A great many rumours have done the rounds on the subject. Initial reports that Miller’s departure was amicable soon gave way to talk of behind the scenes clashes with star and producer Ryan Reynolds over tone, content and casting, and indications that the first ‘Deadpool’ hadn’t been the happiest working experience for all involved.

However, to date we’ve heard nothing on the matter from Miller himself – but now, in a new interview with CG Garage (quotes via Collider), the director finally has his say. And it seems his version of events does not entirely correlate with what we’ve been told.

Miller says, “I didn’t want to make some stylized movie that was 3 times the budget… I wanted to make the same kind of movie that we made before because I think that’s the right movie to make for the character. So don’t believe what you read on the internet.”

These are interesting remarks, as they come to light around the same time that ‘Deadpool’ producer Simon Kinberg has declared to Entertainment Weekly that the sequel – now set to be directed by David Leitch (‘John Wick’) – will “resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie,” and will instead “stay true to the tenets of it’s the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special — it’s not the explosions and the special effects.”

Miller also denies reports that he parted ways with Reynolds over the casting of Kyle Chandler as Cable, which the director insists was never the plan. And in particular he appears to take issue with recent remarks from Reynolds about how difficult ‘Deadpool’ was to make.

The director insists, “The movie was a joy to make. I think you see it on screen. We all had such a good time. We had a few arguments in post, but nothing more than usual.

“The crew was so great, everybody was going to come back and we were going to have such a good time and the idea that it was a difficult movie… It wasn’t, it was a joy, and it was the best experience of my life.”

Even so, Miller stresses he has nothing but well-wishes for all those working on the sequel, expected to start production in the new year:

“I hope it’s a great movie… I haven’t met David [Leitch], but he’s a great guy from everything I’ve heard.

“I want nothing but the best for the character. And for Fox, too. They deserve to make more money. They need to make more money [laughs]. They were great. They were terrific.”

‘Deadpool 2’ doesn’t have a confirmed UK release date yet, but is set to open in the US on 2 March 2018.
